Cost Analysis of Using Cover Crops in Citrus Production

چکیده
Florida has a long association with citrus ( Citrus sp.) production. However, the industry in been devastated by Huanglongbing (HLB) or greening disease Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus). HLB affects tree phloem and eventually causes death. Cover crops, noncash have traditionally used row crop production to improve soil organic matter, for nitrogen fixing, weed control. growers may benefit from adopting cover crops because healthier soils could yields fruit quality of trees. are uncertain about costs benefits associated investments. The objective our study was analyze whether represent an economically feasible option growers. We calculated break-even prices ‘Valencia’ non-‘Valencia’ oranges sinensis ) terms price per box (equivalent 90 lb Florida) pound solids (amount soluble oranges) considering additional short-term savings using across various yield scenarios based on past 10 years data. Considering per-acre cost increased $107.3/acre 5.73% constituted 5.42% total during first year adoption. After 2018–19 peak, both decreased steadily. Adopting current yield–quality scenario will not be profitable either oranges. oranges, at median levels 193.5 boxes/acre 6.08 solids/box, respectively, adoption would $2.25/lb comparable market 5 years.

Cover Crops in Sustainable Food Production
Cover crops are important components of sustainable agricultural systems. They increase surface residue and aid in the reduction of soil erosion. They improve the structure and water-holding capacity of the soil and thus increase the effectiveness of applied N fertilizer. Legume cover crops such as hairy vetch and crimson clover fix nitrogen and contribute to the nitrogen requirements of subseq...

متن کاملMorpho – physiological characteristics of Cover crops for analysis of upland rice production in relay intercropping systems
To assess the suitability of Leguminous species in rice intercropping systems, physiological and morphological characteristics of Crotalaria juncea, Cajanus cajan, Mucuna pruriens var. cochinchinensis, Calopogonium mucunoides, Aeschynomene histrix and Stylosanthes hamata were determined in monoculture. C. cajan and S. hamata were selected and intercropped with two upland rice cultivars (WAB56-5...
